Garden Design

The design process may include all or some of the stages below, dependent upon the project size and the needs of the client.

1. Initial Consultation

I visit the garden and we discuss your requirements and aspirations for the space.

I bring images to inspire you and we begin to explore styles and possible design solutions for the garden. Following this meeting we agree a written design brief.

I work closely with clients throughout the design process, enabling me to produce a design for you which is bespoke; which reflects your tastes and is right for you and your garden.

2. Survey and Site Analysis

A site survey is required in order to plot all key existing features, take level measurements, and to produce an accurate scaled drawing.

A professional surveyor is used for larger and more complex sites. A site analysis involves spending time in the garden and considering, amongst many other things, aspect, views and existing features. Soil samples are taken for analysis.

3. Concept plans

I provide 2 and 3D plans plus mood boards and whatever other visual material is required to illustrate the initial design ideas.

Generally drawn on the computer with hand rendering, for accuracy and ease of working with other contractors. However hand drawn plans can be provided as an alternative if the client prefers this style.

4. Detailed drawings and Specification

A master plan is produced once the design is agreed. More detailed drawings are produced for contractors, to enable accurate construction.

Construction drawings may be required for hard landscaping details or bespoke features such as gates or screens, designed to tie in with the aesthetic of the garden. Specification documents enable like for like quotes to be obtained from recommended contractors.

5. Planting Design and Sourcing

Planting design can be undertaken as part of a garden design project or a separate commission.

I provide a planting service : sourcing, supplying and planting the plants specified. I source and supply decorative items such as sculpture, containers and garden furniture to add the finishing touches to a garden.

6.Project monitoring and on going maintenance

During a garden build I undertake as many site visits as are required to ensure that the integrity of the design is preserved throughout the construction phase.

Post completion, I like to return to check establishment of the planting. I also provide ongoing support in the form of a garden tidy service and a bespoke plant maintenance booklet, including photos of all plants in the garden, and their care needs
We undertook a complete renovation of our house and garden which lasted the best part of a year. Of all the people who did work for us during our project, Vanessa was our best decision. She turned an unloved courtyard garden into a beautiful, inviting walled garden full of colour, and in doing so gave us an extra play space which beckons our children for hours at a time. Across the year, there is always vivid colour, to the point where our children comment on what colour might come next, and they love checking the fruit trees and bushes for apples and strawberries. Vanessa is extremely knowledgeable and her decisions are considered ones which make the best of the space and accommodate the family's needs. Vanessa had to liaise with our hard landscaping contractors as part of the design process, and they worked so well together that they have said they hope to meet her again. I would recommend her without hesitation.
